Hopefully you know what it feels like to be in the flow state. It’s the feeling when you’re operating close to the edge of your abilities without really thinking about it and making split second decisions subconsciously.
I credit this happiness secret to Jimmy Carr from a conversation I heard him have on Russel Brand’s podcast. Jimmy’s flow state is when he’s on stage performing stand up comedy and it’s why he tours comedy clubs, theatres and arenas almost constantly.
“I think flow states are where happiness lives. If you get into a state where you lose track of time, that’s a pretty good indicator. You’re doing something you’re so engaged in, you forget where you are.”
Jimmy Carr
Notice what you’re doing when you’re in the flow state and try to do more of that thing. If it’s at work then that’s even better. You’re getting paid to be happy!
I’ve get myself in the flow state going downhill on a mountain bike. I’ve also found flow at work when I’m part of a really engaging workshop with everyone working together to sort something out. It’s why I’ve made facilitating workshops the main thing I want to do and why my business Bright 7 has a product designed to get teams in that flow state together.
It’s awesome when entire teams are in a flow state. They communicate openly and efficiently. They know exactly who is doing what and why. They have a clear purpose and clear priorities. When they have challenges they work through them in a structured and considered way. They sometimes have disagreements and robust conversations but they listen as much as they speak and respect one another. They laugh a lot. These teams have sustainable high performance and it’s an amazing asset for any organisation.
Get flow and get happy!
Cheers Iain
